Service learning projects with Lady Of Lourdes and Joslyn Art Museum:
- The first project in 2014 combined the efforts of 7th graders from Lady of Lourdes School in Omaha, staff of the Joslyn Art Museum, staff from UNO's Service Learning Academy, 4 UNO undergraduate students and myself to create an interactive game for patrons viewing a special exhibit on Thomas Moran chromolithographs from an early expedition to Yellowstone. The effort helped the 7th graders learn earth science basics, and the game educated the public about the geology within Moran's prints (played >250 times).
- A second project in 2015 involved the same parties, but the activity developed for interested patrons focused on the incredible diversity of building stone within the museum that comes from around the world, and the geologic stories associated with those stones. The activity was named by the 7th graders Lord of the Rocks, and has been used by > 400 visitors..
- A third project in 2016 looked at the geology explicit or implicit in paintings of the permanent collection, and developed an activity that engages museum visitors exploring the art through the lense of intertwined rock and water cycles, and the sometimes obvious and sometimes subtle role that geology plays in the art.
- A fourth project in 2018 revisited the effort in 2016, but with the new European exhibit at the museum.
- Helped provide an workshop on the this service project at the Engaged Scholarship Consortium at UNO Oct. 11-16th.
